What Are M.S. ERW Round Pipes?

M.S. ERW Round Pipes are manufactured by the Electric Resistance Welding (ERW) process: hot-rolled mild steel strip is cold-formed into a tube shape and then high-frequency electric current is used to weld the seam — producing a uniform, strong longitudinal seam weld. The welded seam is then heat-treated and the pipe is sized to precise OD tolerances.

IS:1239 covers M.S. ERW pipes up to 150mm NB in Light, Medium and Heavy weight series. IS:3589 covers larger diameter M.S. pipes from 168mm OD (approx. 150mm NB) to 2000mm OD. I.S. Engineering Co. supplies pipes from 15mm NB to 300mm NB conforming to the applicable IS standard for each size.

Light, Medium and Heavy Series — What's the Difference?

  • Light (L) — Minimum wall thickness. Used for light-duty applications like water supply, irrigation, non-structural uses. Most economical.
  • Medium (M) — Standard wall thickness. The most commonly used series for plumbing, water mains, fire-fighting, structural. Good balance of weight and strength.
  • Heavy (H) — Maximum wall thickness. Used for high-pressure service, structural columns, heavy industrial fluid lines. Higher cost but higher pressure rating.

M.S. ERW Round Pipes – Industries & Applications

Municipal Water Supply

Primary application. M.S. ERW Round Pipes in Medium and Heavy series are used for water distribution mains, service connections and pumping main pipelines by municipal corporations and water authorities.

Domestic & Commercial Plumbing

Used in domestic water supply, commercial building plumbing, hot and cold water distribution and drainage systems. Smaller sizes (15–50mm NB) most common in building plumbing.

Fire-Fighting Systems

Medium and Heavy series pipes used in fire-fighting ring mains, sprinkler distribution headers and hydrant connections. Galvanized (GI) pipes preferred for fire service to prevent internal corrosion.

Structural Hollow Sections

Used as structural circular hollow sections (CHS) in columns, trusses, space frames and architectural structures where the circular profile is preferred aesthetically or structurally.

Oil & Fluid Transport

Used for transport of non-corrosive oils, fuels and industrial fluids in pipelines. Heavy series pipes preferred for higher pressure fluid transport applications.

Irrigation & Agriculture

Used in irrigation mains, canal lining outlets and agricultural water distribution systems. Light and Medium series pipes used for gravity-fed low-pressure irrigation.

M.S. ERW Round Pipes – Frequently Asked Questions

What are M.S. ERW Round Pipes?

+

M.S. ERW Round Pipes (Electric Resistance Welded Round Pipes) are mild steel tubes manufactured by cold-forming hot-rolled steel strip into a tube and welding the seam using high-frequency electric resistance welding. They conform to IS:1239 (up to 150mm NB) and IS:3589 (150mm–300mm NB) standards. Available in Light, Medium and Heavy weight series in 15mm NB to 300mm NB.

What is the difference between Light, Medium and Heavy series M.S. pipes?

+

The three series differ in wall thickness: Light (L) — minimum wall, lowest pressure rating, lightest weight, most economical; Medium (M) — standard wall, most widely used series for water supply and general purpose; Heavy (H) — maximum wall, highest pressure rating, heaviest, used for high-pressure service and structural applications. For standard water supply, Medium series is the most common specification.

What is the difference between IS:1239 and IS:3589 pipes?

+

IS:1239 covers M.S. ERW pipes in Light, Medium and Heavy series for sizes up to 150mm NB. IS:3589 covers steel pipes from 168.3mm OD (approx. 150mm NB) to 2000mm OD for water, gas and sewage mains. I.S. Engineering Co. supplies pipes conforming to the applicable IS standard for each size range.

Is galvanized M.S. Round Pipe available?

+

Yes. M.S. ERW Round Pipes are available in black (bare) finish and hot-dip galvanized (GI) finish. Galvanized pipes are preferred for water supply and fire-fighting applications where corrosion resistance is important. Contact us at +91 83558 15350 for galvanized pipe pricing and availability.

What is the pressure rating of M.S. ERW Round Pipes?

+

The working pressure of M.S. ERW Round Pipes depends on the size, wall thickness (Light/Medium/Heavy) and the material grade. As a general guide: Medium series 25mm NB pipe — approximately 90 bar; 50mm NB — approximately 50 bar; 100mm NB — approximately 30 bar. Exact pressure ratings must be calculated per IS:1239 or the applicable design code for your service conditions.

What applications are M.S. Round Pipes used for?

+

M.S. ERW Round Pipes are used in: municipal water supply mains, domestic and commercial plumbing, fire-fighting ring mains and sprinkler systems, oil and fluid transport pipelines, structural circular hollow sections (CHS), scaffolding poles, agricultural irrigation mains, and industrial process fluid lines in chemical and process plants.
