Elbow Fittings (45° & 90°)
M.S. Elbow Pipe Fittings Manufacturer & Supplier – Mumbai, India · Since 1999
M.S. Elbow Pipe Fittings are used to change the direction of fluid, gas or slurry flow in a piping system. I.S. Engineering Co. manufactures 45° and 90° Elbow Fittings in Short Radius (SR / 1D) and Long Radius (LR / 1.5D) configurations from IS:2062 mild steel at our Darukhana, Mumbai factory. Available in sizes 15mm NB to 300mm NB with butt weld (BW) ends to ANSI B16.9 and IS standards. Used in oil & gas, water supply, chemical, construction and marine piping systems. Bulk supply PAN India.
What Are Elbow Fittings (45° & 90°)?
Elbow Fittings are pipe fittings used to change the direction of flow by the specified angle — either 45° (eighth bend) or 90° (quarter bend). The elbow connects two pipes at its two ends, redirecting the flow in the new direction.
Elbow fittings are specified by three key parameters: angle (45° or 90°), radius type (Short Radius or Long Radius), and nominal bore size (NB). The centreline radius of the elbow determines the smoothness of the flow change and the pressure drop through the fitting.
Short Radius (SR) vs Long Radius (LR) Elbows — Key Differences
- Short Radius (SR / 1D): Centreline radius = 1× pipe NB. More compact. Higher pressure drop. Used where space is limited. Not recommended for gas/slurry service or where pressure drop is critical.
- Long Radius (LR / 1.5D): Centreline radius = 1.5× pipe NB. Smoother flow change. Lower pressure drop and turbulence. Standard for process piping. Preferred in ASME B31.3 process piping.

Elbow Fittings (45° & 90°) – Industries & Applications
Oil & Gas Piping
90° LR elbows used at all direction changes in refinery process piping, gas pipelines and petrochemical plant piping. LR elbows preferred to minimise erosion and pressure drop in gas and liquid hydrocarbon service.
Water Supply & Plumbing
Used in municipal water mains, building plumbing and domestic water supply at all direction changes. Both SR and LR elbows used — LR for main pipework, SR for tight plumbing spaces.
Chemical & Process Plants
LR elbows standard in chemical process piping to minimise turbulence, erosion and pressure drop. Important in corrosive service where wall thinning at SR elbows can be rapid.
Fire-Fighting Systems
Used in fire-fighting ring mains, sprinkler systems and hydrant networks at direction changes. Both SR and LR elbows used depending on available space and pressure drop requirements.
Construction & Infrastructure
Used in HVAC systems, building plumbing, sewage lines and utility piping at all changes of direction. Most common fittings in construction site fabrication and building services engineering.
Marine & Shipbuilding
Used in ship piping systems for ballast, bilge, fuel, fire-fighting and utility service. SR elbows preferred in ship machinery spaces where space is extremely limited.
Elbow Fittings (45° & 90°) – Frequently Asked Questions
What are Elbow Pipe Fittings?
+Elbow Pipe Fittings are curved pipe fittings that change the direction of fluid or gas flow in a piping system. Available in 45° (eighth bend) and 90° (quarter bend) angles. I.S. Engineering Co. manufactures M.S. Elbow Fittings in Short Radius (1D) and Long Radius (1.5D) types in sizes 15mm NB to 300mm NB to ANSI B16.9 and IS standards.
What is the difference between Short Radius and Long Radius Elbows?
+Short Radius (SR) Elbows: Centreline radius = 1× nominal pipe size (1D). More compact but higher pressure drop and more flow turbulence. Used in tight spaces where layout demands compact fittings. Long Radius (LR) Elbows: Centreline radius = 1.5× nominal pipe size (1.5D). Smoother flow change with lower pressure drop and turbulence. Standard specification for most process, oil & gas and water piping. LR elbows are preferred unless space specifically requires SR.
When should I use a 45° Elbow vs a 90° Elbow?
+Use a 90° Elbow when the pipe must turn at a right angle (perpendicular direction change). Use a 45° Elbow when the pipe must turn at a 45° angle — often used in pairs to create an offset or route pipes around obstructions at lower pressure drop than a 90° elbow. Two 45° elbows create a 90° offset with less turbulence than a single 90° elbow.
What sizes of Elbow Fittings are available?
+I.S. Engineering Co. supplies M.S. Elbow Fittings in sizes from 15mm NB (½") to 300mm NB (12") in both 45° and 90° angles, Short Radius (1D) and Long Radius (1.5D) types. Both butt weld (BW) and socket weld (SW) end types available. Specify size, angle (45°/90°) and radius type (SR/LR) when ordering.
What materials are available for Elbow Fittings?
+I.S. Engineering Co. manufactures Elbow Fittings from IS:2062 Grade E250 Mild Steel (MS) — the most widely used material for industrial piping in India. For applications requiring stainless steel, carbon steel ASTM A234 or alloy steel elbows, please contact us at +91 83558 15350 to discuss your specific material requirement.
Can I get non-standard angle Elbow Fittings?
+Standard elbow angles supplied by I.S. Engineering Co. are 45 degrees and 90 degrees. Non-standard angles (such as 30°, 60°, 135°, 180° return bends) are available as custom orders with minimum quantities. Contact us at +91 83558 15350 with your specific angle requirement and we will advise on availability and lead time.
