Male Female (M&F) Flanges
M.S. Male & Female Flanges Manufacturer & Supplier – Mumbai, India · Since 1999
M.S. Male and Female (M&F) Flanges create a positive interlocking bolted connection — the Male flange has a raised circular tongue that precisely fits into a corresponding recessed groove on the Female flange. This self-centering, interlocking design ensures perfect pipe alignment, superior sealing with soft gaskets and effective retention of the gasket under pressure. Manufactured with precision CNC machining at our Darukhana, Mumbai factory. Used in chemical processing, pharmaceutical, corrosive fluid and sensitive process piping where gasket containment and alignment accuracy are critical. Available in sizes 15mm NB to 300mm NB.
What Are Male Female (M&F) Flanges?
Male Female (M&F) Flanges consist of a matched pair: the Male flange has a raised circular tongue (boss) on its mating face, and the Female flange has a corresponding recessed groove on its mating face. When bolted together, the male tongue seats into the female groove — creating a positive, interlocking connection that:
- Self-centres the gasket — the groove contains the gasket and prevents blow-out
- Ensures perfect pipe alignment — the tongue-groove engagement eliminates misalignment
- Provides superior sealing — the contained gasket is compressed uniformly across its full width
- Prevents gasket creep — the groove walls prevent the gasket from being squeezed outward under pressure
Important: M&F Flanges Must Always Be Ordered as Matched Pairs
Male Female Flanges are always manufactured and supplied as matched pairs — one Male flange and one Female flange for each bolted joint. The tongue dimensions of the Male must precisely match the groove dimensions of the Female. Always specify the quantity in pairs (e.g., 10 pairs = 10 male + 10 female flanges) when ordering.

Male Female (M&F) Flanges – Industries & Applications
Chemical Process Piping
Primary application. Used where gasket blowout or misalignment would contaminate the process or cause hazardous leakage. The contained gasket in M&F flanges eliminates these risks.
Pharmaceutical Manufacturing
Used in pharmaceutical API and formulation plants where cross-contamination prevention and leak-free connections are mandatory. M&F flanges ensure zero gasket movement.
Acid & Alkali Service
Used with soft gaskets (PTFE, rubber, graphite) in acid and alkali piping where the M&F groove contains the gasket and prevents it from being extruded into the process stream.
Precision Piping Alignment
Used where pipe alignment is critical — the interlocking tongue-groove ensures both pipe ends are perfectly coaxially aligned without needing special alignment tools or jigs.
Male Female (M&F) Flanges – Frequently Asked Questions
What are Male Female Flanges?
+Male Female (M&F) Flanges are a matched pair of flanges where the Male flange has a raised circular tongue and the Female flange has a matching recessed groove. When bolted together, the tongue-groove engagement self-centres the pipe and contains the gasket — providing superior alignment accuracy and sealing performance compared to flat face or raised face flanges.
Why are Male Female Flanges used in chemical piping?
+In chemical piping, gasket blowout (gasket being extruded outward under pressure) can cause hazardous leaks and process contamination. The Female flange groove physically contains the gasket, preventing it from being squeezed out under pressure. This makes M&F flanges the preferred choice for chemical, pharmaceutical and corrosive service piping.
Must Male and Female Flanges always be ordered in pairs?
+Yes. Male Female Flanges must always be ordered as matched pairs — one Male and one Female for each bolted joint. The tongue of the Male flange must precisely match the groove dimensions of the Female flange. When ordering, specify the quantity in pairs (e.g., 10 pairs = 10 Male + 10 Female flanges). Never mix Male Female flanges from different manufacturers as tongue/groove dimensions may vary.
What is the difference between Male Female Flanges and Ring Joint Flanges?
+Both Male Female (M&F) and Ring Joint (RTJ) flanges contain the gasket — but in different ways. Male Female Flanges use a tongue-and-groove design with a soft full-face gasket seated in the groove — suitable for PN6 to PN40 service. Ring Joint Flanges use a hard metal oval or octagonal ring gasket seated in a groove on both flanges — used for Class 600 to 2500 very high-pressure oil and gas service.
How are Male Female Flanges installed?
+Installation: (1) Clean both Male and Female flange faces thoroughly; (2) Place a full-face soft gasket (rubber, PTFE or compressed fibre) in the Female groove; (3) Align the Male flange tongue into the Female groove — the tongue self-centres the connection; (4) Hand-tighten all bolts evenly; (5) Torque bolts to the specified value in a cross-pattern sequence to compress the gasket uniformly.
